Information – Communication is Key
After going through the details with the teachers, we understood that the best route would be to ensure the full participation of the families involved. After all, we were asking them to incorporate this programme into their after-school activities. I mean, 5 minutes a day is 5 minutes a day! We were also looking to see how easy it was (or not) to have an open communications with the parents involved. Needless to say, they were thrilled, and eager to give us feedback.
Even we were surprised with 100% participation rates!
Most people are aware that getting children to dedicate any time to homework is a difficult task, let alone if what we want them to do is, well, to learn SPELLING! We requested that the parents not get so involved, but yes, to observe. We wanted to see if the children would have the initiative to do this on their own, without much external influence. We were careful not to promote competition, nor to push our agenda (they do have other homework after all!). Something magical happened. Every participant dedicated from 8-15 minutes daily, and the next day… well, the teachers noticed how they would brag about their results, and the positive effect that that would have on the group. EVERYBODY wanted to be a spelling bee champion! The fantastic thing was that, nobody was left out, as the design allows you to compete with yourself, you naturally improve, so everybody IS a champion.
Motivated students = Happy teachers
Not only did the students take a new interest in the Literacy Programme, the teachers also observed that the students were more participative in class, and seemed to have more self confidence when answering and speaking in English. And this was just over a 10 week period. Watch the video for the full explanations, and of course, we can share the results upon request. It really does make a difference.
